Bowling might be a new game for many. Since bowling is basically a social game here is some information that could be of help to you if you ever decide to go to the bowling boulevard with your friends, family or colleagues.
HOW IS TEN-PIN BOWLING PLAYED
The game of ten-pin bowling can be played by anybo dy from the age of four years to senior citizens in their eighties. It consists of knocking down ten pins standing at a distance of sixty feet from the foul line by bowling a urethane ball of various weights from six pounds to sixteen pounds to suit the player.
The bowler picks up the ball from the ball return rack (the weight of the ball being governed by the age and sex of the bowler) gathers some momentum in the approach area and bowls the ball towards the pins so as to knock down the maximum number of pins. The number of fallen pins is the score. The machine then automatically cycles and the fallen or dead pins are removed from the pin deck and the remaining standing pins are put back on the deck. Meanwhile the ball which was thrown travels back automatically to the ball return rack. The bowler then again throws the ball at the pins and if the player knocks the remaining standing pins down the bowler gets a "spare". The score of the next throw is added to the frame in which the bowler got a "spare".
In a game there are a minimum of ten and a maximum of twelve. If a bowler knocks down the ten pins in the first throw the bowler gets a "strike" and the score of the next two throws are added to the frame in which the bowler got a "strike". The maximum possible score is three hundred if a bowler gets a "strike in all twelve frames.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE GAME
While the earliest evidence of bowling dates back to ancient Egypt , modern forms of the game can be traced back to the Middle Ages. In England , a nine-pin version of the game appeared as early as the 1100's. In the Netherlands , people played a similar game called Dutch Pins, and they took this with them when they emigrated to the New World during the 1600's.
Bowling became increasingly popular in the United States during the 1800's and the mid-1900's. It had become an accepted form of family recreation. Organized professional bowling began in the United States in 1959. Today, the International Bowling Federation (Federation Internationale Des Quilleurs, or FIQ, founded in 1951) sponsors a worldwide tournament for amateur bowlers every four years.
